The way image information is stored inside an image file. There are lots of image file formats but few have special relation to panorama creation. An uncomplete list:
The GIF format is mainly used for low resolution images and Logos. It can be displayed by all browsers (except the text only mode ones).
JPEG is the most used image file format for photographic images on the web. It can be displayed by all browsers (except the text only mode ones). Equirectangular images for PTViewer or SPi-V are provided in JPEG format on the web.
There are some derivatives:
- FJPG is an extension desgned by Helmut Dersch to allow display of high dynamic range panoramas in PTViewer 3.x
- JPA, JPB and JPC are encrypted formats to be used with PTViewer.
- PTV is a special format to be used with PTViewer 2.8 from Fulvio Senore
PNG can be displayed by most modern browsers.
TIFF is a open and widely used image file format with different purpose use.
RAW is a group of formats produced by different digital cameras when set to the highest quality setting.
