The World Wide Panorama (often abbreviated as wwp) was started in March 2004 by G. Donald Bain, the then Director of the Geography Computing Facility, University of California at Berkeley. It has since become an ongoing series of events and attracts artists from a large number of countries.
Visitors can reach the project website via worldwidepanorama.com which originally was hosted on a server of the Geo-Images Project at geoimages.berkeley.edu. The WWP is now run by the World Wide Panorama Foundation, a California Public Benefit Corporation (a non-commercial project).
Participation
Participation is open to everyone, interpretations of the theme have to be uploaded as cylindrical or spherical panoramas as well as object vr. The required file format is QTVR.
Photography takes place during a time frame of several days before and after the solstices (longest and shortest days of the year) and equinoxes (days and nights of equal length). An iCal / Outlook compatible calendar maintained by Landis Bennett is available at icalx.com/public/Landis/WWP.ics. If you need to plan your shooting schedule in advance use e.g. Wikipedia to look up the actual UTC date/time table of the coming solstice or equinox and convert that to your local time with timeanddate.com.
Event themes are chosen by the organisators, which are open for suggestions about new themes. The WWP Yahoo group is the preferred mailing list / web forum for the communication between interested artists and notices from the organisators. This list is also helpful if you run into technical problems during the preparation period.
Prep server
As soon as photography period for each event starts the prep(aration) server is opened for submissions and ready to accept new accounts. That server is located at contribute.worldwidepanorama.org/gen/ and is used to upload panorama (and sound) files as well as to edit panorama captions, further information plus a personal page for each member. New accounts that are not used to upload a panorama in time for the coming event will be deleted, i.e. such an (empty) account would need to be newly set up during the following photography/editing period.
File sizes
Beginning with the Elevation event (19-22 June 2008) the limits for maximum file sizes have been raised to
- Standard size: max. 1 MB (700 kB recommended)
- Fullscreen size: max. 5 MB (3 MB recommended)
Smaller sizes are preferred for faster download times so visitors with slow connections don't get annoyed. Sometimes there is a need to upload bigger file sizes to achieve a better quality, though. More information is available here.
