Philippe "Philo" Hurbain invented the mapping of a spherical panorama onto a rhombicuboctahedron, a regular shaped approximation of a sphere. This is called a philosphere.

Similar to Philo's work are tools to split panoramas into orange peel segments or "gores". A free perl script, pictures and explanation are available on the Original IP-slicer page. A higher quality version of this script is included in the Image::RGBA perl module. A way to create gores with hugin is find here: Creating Gores
