Image orientation with the longer side in horizontal direction like usually used for landscape photography (hence the name).

Most image sensors and many film types have a longer and a shorter side. Shooting landscape gives a wider horizontal and a narrower vertical Field of View. For a cylindrical panorama you need less shots for a given field of view if you shoot landscape but you get a lower resolution.
