There are lots of image file formats but few have special relation to panorama creation. An uncomplete list:

GIF

The GIF format is mainly used for low resolution images and Logos. It can be displayed by all browsers (except the text only mode ones).

JPEG

JPEG is the most used image file format for photographic images on the web. It can be displayed by all browsers (except the text only mode ones). Equirectangular images for PTViewer or Spi-V are provided in JPEG format on the web.

HDR

HDR High Dynamic Range image format used by PTViewer 3.x to display high dynamic range images.

PNG

PNG can be displayed by most modern browsers.

PSD

PSD is a document file format from Adobe Systems Inc. used by Photoshop

TIFF

TIFF is a open and widely used image file format with different purpose use.
